The Glutathione Robbers

In case you missed my previous blog post on the “Secret Weapon of Mass Destruction” (better known as Glutathione), I encourage you to check it out.

Because of the huge importance of Glutathione to our health and well-being, you owe it to yourself to eliminate (as much as possible), the “ROBBERS” of glutatione.  Here they are:

The Glutathione Robbers:

  • artificial sweeteners
  • poor diet and/or so-called “health food”
  • medications (over-the-counter and prescription)
  • chronic stress
  • pre-mature aging
  • infections
  • environmental toxins
  • pollution
  • radiation
  • over use of antibiotics
  • GMO’s (genetically modified organisms)
  • injuries

When these “robbers” do their thing, it leaves us susceptible to oxidative stress, free radicals, infections and cancer. In addition, the liver becomes overworked, damaged and unable to do its major job of detoxification.

So, what do we do? Well, that depends on your specific situation? If you were a chronically ill person, you are very likely, without a doubt, to be deficient in glutathione, and require supplementation.

When I worked in the Intensive Care Unit as a nutrition support dietitian, I was responsible for formulating my patients, “Total Parenteral Nutrition” (TPN) bags and assuring that the correct dosage of glutathione was included. These patients were very ill and were unable to take food by mouth and therefore their total nutrition could only be administered intravenously. Glutathione was a cruicial component of their TPN and critical to their recovery.

However, you don’t have to be critically ill and a patient in the intensive care unit to require glutathione. Because of the stressors mentioned above that deplete glutathione, many of the ailments that you may suffer from, can be due to a glutathione deficiency.  These are ailments such as:

  • insomnia
  • fatigue
  • joint pain
  • elevated blood sugar
  • high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol

Glutathione also helps the adrenals heal 30-50% faster. Our adrenal glands get damaged every day by stress and all the factors mentioned above.

So, how do you know if you have a glutathione deficiency?

Great question!!  I answer this for you in my next blog post of this series.  Hope to see you there!!
