Boost Your Immunity & Help Fight Cancer with an Infrared Sauna
One of the many benefits of infrared sauna is how it can boost your immunity and help fight cancer. There are many scientific health studies (see below) that support this.
This blog post is one of eight blog posts I have written for you to help you “Discover the Power of Healing With An Infrared Sauna.” I hope you will visit this link to learn about the many other health benefits of including infrared sauna bathing in your lifestyle.

Consider why we get a fever. This is our body responding to viral and bacterial infections. A fever is one of the body’s most powerful front line defenses against viruses, infection and disease. Raising the body’s core temperature (known as hyperthermia), diminishes the advancement of infection, virus and bacteria growth because most viruses and bacteria cannot thrive above 102 degrees fahrenheit. As effective as a fever is in curtailing growth, it also energizes our body’s natural killer cells, the active aggressive immune response team within our bodies.
A master regulator gene (master of other genes), called the FOXO3 gene, is also activated by infrared sauna (36). This gene sends messages in your body to create more white blood cells (WBC), and to create more stem cells. It also tells your cancer protective genes and antioxidant genes to get to work and clean your body at the cellular level. The FOXO3 gene is also linked to longevity (11).
In a 2013 study by Poland researchers, a single 15-minute sauna session was found to raise the white blood cells, lymphocytes, neutrophils, and basophil counts by 40%. These are all signs of a stimulated immune system (27). These effects were found to be more enhanced among athletes, and believed to have even more benefits when used regularly. This stress on the body by the heat of the sauna is thought to give the immune system a boost.

In a Finnish study, 25 volunteers participated in sauna bathing, while 25 controls abstained. The frequency, duration and severity of the common cold was recorded for six months. In the sauna group, there was significant fewer episodes of the common cold (4).
Yoshimizu (35) has carried out extensive research on cancer patients who have failed cancer treatment (chemotherapy and radiation). He reports success with “thermotherapy,” a method of heating and killing cancer cells, and thereby improving and mobilizing the body’s immune system. This has also been a promising approach reported by others (34), as cancer cells can become weaker with high heat. It has also been reported that hyperthermia is a promising strategy to enhance apoptosis (natural death of cells) in the treatment of cancer (1). In another cancer study, FIR inhibited the proliferation of mice liver tumors by 86% in 30 days (12).
It’s not a bad idea to get in your infrared sauna as soon as you feel an illness come along, or even a headache or joint pain. It’s actually also normal for us to have some low grade infections at any given time, but some people have serious infections they might not even know they have yet, e.g. EBV (Epstein-Barr virus) or Lyme disease, and FIR sauna can reduce the severity of these conditions.

Things to Look for In a Sauna:
Infrared sauna is the best way to get that “river of sweat” comfortably. It’s crucial that you sweat to get the benefits. If you don’t sweat, it is not the right sauna, and if it is too miserable for you to sweat, you won’t want to do it. Infrared heat gets you to that “river of sweat” without you being uncomfortable.
Problems with other type of saunas are:
- Heats the room and skin
- Hard to breathe (steam)
- Can create mold/grow bacteria
You will want to use a sauna that is low in radiation and has “full spectrum,” not just NEAR, and not just FAR infrared. You will also want the sauna to reach a therapeutic heat of over 160 degrees. That’s because it is at this temperature that the “river of sweat” is produced, where core body temperature is raised, where the production of heat shock proteins are produced and where the immune response is mobilized.
Infrared Protocols:
Use daily for a minimum of 30-45 minutes at 120-125 degree F for the first two weeks, then 125-135 degree F for the next two weeks.
Drink 8-16 ounces of water before and after each sauna session. Once a week add a few drops of trace minerals to your water supply.
